The Morning-After Pill IS:
- Safe and effective birth control that can be taken AFTER sex to prevent pregnancy.
- Taken up to 5 days (120 hours) after unprotected sex, but works better the sooner it is taken.
- Also known as the Morning-After Pill, EC or Plan B.
The Morning-After Pill is NOT…
- The Morning-After Pill is not abortion. If a woman is already pregnant, it will not cause an abortion and will not cause problems in an existing pregnancy.
- The Morning-After Pill will not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or HIV. To protect yourself from STIs and HIV, you must use a condom every time you have sex.
- The Morning-After Pill is not for use as an on-going birth control. Call 311 for a referral to a health care professional to talk about different birth control options or visit your local family planning clinic.
How does the Morning-After Pill work?
- The Morning-After Pill is emergency birth control that a woman can take to prevent pregnancy within 5 days after unprotected sex.
- Emergency birth control delays or prevents a woman’s body from releasing an egg or from being fertilized by a man’s sperm.
- The Morning-After Pill does not cause abortion. If a woman is already pregnant, the Morning-After Pill will not affect her pregnancy.
