Blending form with function, the Harlem Health Promotion Center’s DVD “My Life, My Decision” uses realistic plotlines to entertain and educate youth about Emergency Contraception (also known as Plan B®). Filmed in and around Harlem, the short film features six Black and Latino young adults trying to avoid unintended pregnancies in their own lives. While Sheila and Victor normally practice safe sex, an unexpected condom break forces them to seek a backup plan. Cynthia normally relies on the birth control pill for pregnancy prevention, but when her close friend Nia’s post-sex dilemma mimics her own, they both need to find a way to prevent pregnancy after sex. Using friends, family and the internet as resources, each character tries to find a common solution to their problem before it’s too late. After watching “My Life, My Decision,” audience members should feel engaged, informed and interested in getting more information about reproductive health care, including Emergency Contraception.
